Staying Safe in Costa RicaTips for Staying Safe While Surfing in Costa Rica

There aren’t a whole lot of places in the world that can provide you with 700 miles of coastline and volcanoes that tower 12,530 feet. Costa Rica is one of the premier tourist destinations and for good reason. There are so many things to see and do here. One of the things that you shouldn’t overlook is surfing. If you are planning on taking up surfing, there are a few things you need to know to stay safe while out on the water.

Lookout for riptides.

Be aware and have a solid understanding of how to spot riptides and what to do in the event you do get caught up in one. The main thing is to be aware of your surroundings.

One of the best ways to identify a riptide is to look for a gap between the waves. A calm gap between a bunch of waves is often a sign of a riptide. Discolored water along the shore often signals that a riptide is nearby. When you know what to look for, you can stay safe when out on the water.

Prepare for a Rocky Ride

Many of the break points in Costa Rica have a sandy bottom, which is great for providing you with a smooth surfing experience. However, there are still a few areas that have sea-floor rocks. Be on the lookout for these rocks when surfing to protect yourself from unnecessary injuries.

Pay Attention to the Weather

The weather can change at any point in time. The last thing you want is to be stuck way out in the middle of the water when a storm is coming through. Check out the weather to determine what the conditions are going to be like before heading out. Even while out surfing, you should still watch the sky to see if the weather looks bad. If so, you need to head in.

A Costa Rica surf camp is an amazing experience. It is one that you will cherish forever. However, you need to make sure you are safe when out on the water. By following the tips above, you can have a great time learning how to surf and taking in some waves.
